Practical Structures is a consulting engineering practice with highly experienced and skilled staff. We aim to focus our wide range of experience and up to date knowledge of the construction industry to provide a professional, cost effective and personal service to clients. For us, structural engineering is not just about crunching numbers to get a beam size. We are proactive members of the design team dedicated to helping the architect and client turn a vision into reality.

With our lower overheads Practical Structures is able to offer the same level of professionalism one would expect from the larger firms of consulting engineers but at lower cost. We respond quickly to queries and requests for information.



The consulting structural engineering services that we provide include;
  • Structural design of new buildings in all the common construction materials.

  • Refurbishment of domestic, commercial and retail buildings.

  • Extensions, alterations and loft conversions. We have particular experience and expertise with work on older buildings.

  • Structural advice on speculative developments.

  • Structural assessments and reports on building defects.

  • Traditional and reinforced concrete foundations, retaining walls, rafts and piled foundations.




Our Approach
We are keen to be creative members of the design team. For us engineering is not just about crunching numbers to get a beam size. It is about thinking. It is about being innovative. It is about sharing the architectural vision and producing practical structural solutions, envisaging how a structure actually gets built, and avoiding potential problems in achieving it.

Our Expertise
Des McCall, director of Practical Structures, personally oversees every project. Des was educated in Lisburn and at Sussex University, where he gained an honours degree in Civil Engineering. He has over 20 years experience in consulting structural engineering, and is a Chartered Structural and Chartered Civil Engineer.
