The Rural Area Partnership in Derry consists of representatives from community organisations, statutory authorities, the private sector and special interest groups and its primary objective is:

To halt the social and economic decline of the rural communities within the Derry City Council Area and to enable these communities in partnership with all interested parties to devise locally led strategies to facilitate sustainable social, economic and cultural development.

The vulnerability of regional and local rural economies to a wide range of global markets influences and emphasises the importance of the need for an integrated approach to rural development.

In recognition of such continuing influences the Rural Area Partnership In Derry (RAPID), with the continued support of Derry City Council, aims to engage proactively with the rural community and partners in the implementation rural development programmes which will result in the emergence of sustainable resources that will contribute to a vibrant local rural economy.

Some of the key successes of RAPID are outlined as follows:

• Recognised advocates for rural development;

• The success of Leader II where under the Enterprise Theme of 175 projects and initiatives supported 189 jobs were created ranging from part time retail to full time in ICT. In addition a further 154 jobs have been consolidated;

• RAPID have played a key role in the broad series of networking from local networks such as Foyle Rural Women’s Network, provincial with NI Leader Network, nationally with UK Leader Network and internationally with Transnational partnerships in Europe and North America;

• At a strategic level RAPID have contributed to a very broad range of consultation and policy reviews such as Northern Ireland Tourist Board Strategic Review, Strategy 2010, Transport Strategy as well as local reviews such as Local Strategic Partnership, Integrated Small Business Review and Jobs Gap Analysis;

• The Board of RAPID covers a very broad spectrum of experience with its core strengths in the Business and Community Sectors and Farm Interest. Other areas covered include Local Authority, Youth and Long Term Unemployed; Women

• RAPID has a high media and PR profile that has helped raise the profile of rural areas and rural issues;

• RAPID have strong support from the community at large especially the business sector, a recent evaluation talked about the uniqueness of RAPID, its understanding of rural businesses and the barriers;
