Sport Northern Ireland is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL). It was established on 31 December 1973 under the provisions of the Recreation and Youth Service (Northern Ireland) Order 1973 with its main objective being the furtherance of sport and physical recreation.
Sport Northern Ireland’s Corporate Vision is:
'Through sport, to contribute to an inclusive, creative, competent, informed and physically active community'.
In practice, this means Sport Northern Ireland creates and develops programmes and partnerships that will contribute to the following strategic objectives:
Increased participation in sport and physical activity;
Improved sporting performances;
Improved efficiency and effectiveness in the administration of sport.
Sport Northern Ireland is part of a wider sports network and has close relationships with its equivalent organisations in the Republic of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, as well as UK Sport, which has responsibility for UK wide sport.
