Who we are
Welig Heritage Crafts is run by basketmakers and traditional countryside skills practitioners Clive Lyttle and Elaine Burke from their smallholding near Portaferry on the Ards Peninsula in rural County Down, where they live with their four children and various animals.

What we do
We make baskets, gardenware, hurdles and willow sculpture. We make rustic furniture and design and supply living willow structures. We undertake contracts for hedgelaying, drystone walling, hedge/tree planting, woodland management and work with schools.

Our aims
To be environmentally friendly growing willow and other broadleaved trees for our work. To produce a range of work, both functional and artistic. To pass on our skills and knowledge to others through demonstrations, talks, workshops and ultimately to run a sustainable business based on quality, our heritage and traditions and on our creativity.

Schools
The services we can provide for schools can be broken down into two broad categories (or quite often a combination of both):
  • Working in school grounds and
  • Workshops with pupils

School Grounds
We can create anything from a complete school eco-garden from scratch to a makeover of existing
features, a willow dome installation, establishment of raised beds or just maintenance of existing willow features.

Hedgelaying
We can offer hedge management, maintenance and restoration advice and assess the suitability of hedges for laying and carry out practical work where appropriate. As an accredited hedgelayer, Clive holds the AO20 certificate NPTC(UK) qualification. As a member of the Hedgelaying Association of Ireland and The National Hedgelaying Society (GB) Clive aims to promote the craft of hedgelaying through teaching, demonstrating and practice. Previous training experience includes expert facilitation of practical hedge management for Northern Ireland Biodiversity (in association with Scott Cawley Environmental, Dublin).

Walling
Dry stone walls are an important feature in the countryside as a boundary and as habitat for plants and animals. A traditional dry stone wall can enhance the natural landscape and sit comfortably in the environment. We believe strongly in building walls in the traditional manner, local stone where possible and in the style appropriate to the area in which the wall is situated.

Chair Seating
Having developed skills in chair seating and restoration we are able to provide a re-seating and renovation service for tired old chairs both traditional and contemporary. We can offer repairs, restoration and advice for chairs and stools and work with:
  • Traditional rush – hand twisted
  • ‘Reel’ rush (pre-twisted)
  • Danish cord
  • Seagrass
  • Other rope materials.

The one day - frame basket making course - I attended, in Clotworthy House in Antrim was excellent. Clive has a natural ability teach the skills in a clear and informative way and his expertise, enthusiasm and patience enable all participants to progress at their own pace in a supportive and calm atmosphere.
