Some musicians just define their role and Peter Hook is one of those musicians. The former Joy Division and New Order legend, Peter plays the bass like a lead guitar, pulling the hook of the song from the weighty instrument's thick strings and cumbersome frets.
Yeah, Bootsy Collins is technically better; yeah OK, Les Claypool is more innovative; right fine, Flea is more iconic, Mike Watt has done more, and Alex James has nicer hair, but Peter Hook has something none of those guys have. His bass playing does the opposite to the typical. Instead of hanging in the back, driving the song along and adding depth, Peter's lines permeate everything.

The Big List's Metal Correspondent, Mark Ashby, takes in Pat McManus, Therapy?, Million Dollar Reload, Sweet Taste and Simon McBride during the Hard Rock Hell V festival in Prestatyn Sands Holiday Village in Wales.

This past weekend, Fermanagh’s favourite son proved – as if he needed to – that he just loves playing music, and will do so anywhere, at any time and to anyone.
Added to the bill of the last rock festival of the year at just 24 hours’ notice, Pat and his band drove across England to step into the one o’clock Saturday afternoon slot vacated at the last minute by US rockers Little Caesar – a fact the guitarist picked up on when, with his characteristic humour, he introduced himself as “Little Pat”.

A birth and two deaths dominate this month’s news from the local metal scene – but, first, a word of warning to our brethren across on the mainland: stand by to be invaded.
A grand total of three NI acts are making the short journey across the Irish Sea to Wales in a few short weeks, to blow apart the fifth annual Hard Rock Hell festival, which takes place at the Pontins Holiday Village in Prestatyn over the weekend of 1 to 4 December. The charge is being led by guitarist Simon McBride, who opens for Girlschool and Tygers Of Pan Tang on the Thursday evening. He is followed on the Friday by Million Dollar Reload – who will be sandwiching the gig in between support slots on The Quireboys’ Irish tour (including a date at the Spring & Airbrake on Saturday 26th November) and with The Darkness at the Ulster Hall on 4th December – and up-and-coming retro-rockers Sweet Taste, who won their slot at HRH via the recent ‘Highway To Hell’ competition in Glasgow.
