After the raucous rock rollercoaster that was the last Harp Ice Cold Big Gig, we have decided to chill things out a bit this month. Only kidding… February's event is one of the heaviest and deadliest line-ups we've had yet as we prepare to welcome one of Dublin's best bands, Bats. Bats (pic above) are a post-punk/hardcore/metal/math hybrid like no other. Signed to the Dublin based Richter Collective label and with a reputation for frenzied performances and frenetic music, Bats' appearance is a real coup for us here at The Big List, and we haven't been this excited since Big Brother's cancellation. Also on the bill is one of the Big List's favourite bands on the planet, Slomatics.

Northern Ireland’s eccentric, singer-songwriter, Duke Special has revealed a recent Belfast performance was one of the most extraordinary performances of his career to date. Speaking on www.facebook.com/SmirnoffIreland, the Duke said playing to a sell-out home crowd at Belfast’s St Georges’ Market has become his most unforgettable appearance. “It’s kind of impossible to describe,” he said. “If you could bottle the feeling of having worked really hard over a long tour and you finish off in a room crowd surfing to 3,000 people.” Visitors from Northern Ireland to the Smirnoff Ireland Facebook site can view the full story on Duke Special’s memorable night at St George’s Market.

Lambeg drummers and members of the Hounds of Ulster (Google them!) will be lining up for the Belfast Waterfront's production of Stomp - a unique combination of theatre, dance, comedy and percussion - which opened last night (Tuesday). With not a word of dialogue for the entire length of the (almost) two hour, non-stop performance, the eight performers use boots, bins, brooms and everything, including the kitchen sink, (complete with water) to hammer out an explosively feel good rhythm, which had the near capacity audience enthralled from the opening entrance by a broom-pushing 'Wally' - who immediately drew the sympathy of every lady in the house.

The Lisburn road in Belfast is probably the closest thing the North has to Rodeo Drive in Los Angelas. It's where the 'it' girls go to be seen in their fancy cars, while their well groomed, jumper-tied-around-their-neck fiancés try to impress the father law (who just happens to be the judge in their own father's ongoing company tax evasion proceedings). There are two delicatessens for every designer furniture shop, so it's a relief a bit of reality has plonked itself in the middle of all this pretension. Kookys, just beside Ryan's bar at the road's city end, is a neat little café that's full of character, as the name would suggest. Wavy mirrors and surrealist art give the glass fronted establishment a welcoming interior, while said glass front provides a beautifully framed vantage point to watch the world go by and mock the passing socialites.
