| | Shockwaves NME Awards Tour Kicks Off In Belfast | | | | There was an air of anticipation as the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour kicked off in Belfast’s Mandela Hall on January 29. Previous NME tours have signalled the rise of bands like The Killers , Maximo Park, Arctic Monkeys, The View and The Automatic giving this year’s line-up a lot to live up to. Zane Lowe’s favourites The Ting Tings got the party started as the crowd filled the venue. Katie White and drummer Jules De Martino launched into the bands new single ‘Great DJ’, they faced a few technical issues with White’s guitar but managed to over-come them and belt out tunes including ‘Fruit Machine’ and ‘That’s Not My Name’. But it was British electro-rock band Does It Offend You Yeah? who really stood out, the foursome from Reading have remixed songs for major acts like Muse and Bloc Party and had everyone dancing manically from the off with high octane ‘Battle Royale’. Playing up to the crowd Morgan Quaintance scaled the venue’s ceiling rigging and hung down like a bat. Throughout the set he encouraged people to put their hands up in the air and even allowed a girl to sing the chorus to ‘Let’s Make Out’ as he strutted his stuff across the stage. Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong were next to take the stage. Lean, the indie-pop groups frontman, stayed offstage for the first song then towards the end of the instrumental he signalled his arrival by dancing and tom-tom bashing. Last year the band supported a variety of acts including Babyshambles, Dizzee Rascal and the Kaiser Chiefs and has picked up performance traits from each. Their most recent single ‘Lucio Starts Fires’ was well received in addition to ‘Teenagers In Love’ which Lean introduced as “a song about f*cking”. After chanting from the crowd, headliners The Cribs took to the stage. They blasted through ‘Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant’ and fan favourites including ‘Mirror Kissers’, ‘Our Bovine Public’ and ‘Girls Like Mystery’. Ryan Jarman took a moment to point out a picture of the trio’s dog Ollie on the bass drum. After playing the last song ‘The Wrong Way To Be’ Ryan dived into the crowd where he was mobbed and had to retrieve his shoes later in the night. (GK)
