| | Cathedral Quarter Festival Arrives | | | | The summers here again! Ok, not really, but the 9th Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival is, and it bursts back into action on Thursday May 1, 2008 with an ever more ambitious programme. Always eclectic, this year's music programme features everyone from Liam Clancy on May 8 in the Black Box, the man hailed by Bob Dylan as 'the best ballad singer I ever heard in my life' to the maverick Mark E Smith and his legendary band The Fall who play on the same night in the Festival Marquee in Custom House square. In a major coup, the event have secured the talent of Sinead O'Connor, some 20 years after her last performance in the city, in a special free concert with the Ulster Orchestra, to be broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster in the Waterfront Hall on May 12. Other musical thrills come in the form of Beatlegras who revisit the Beatles songbook bluegrass style in McHughs Bar on May 3. There is also a huge list of comedy and theatre with a wide-ranging programme, which includes a unique presentation of Spokesong and Pentecost by Stewart Parker in the old Northern Bank Building-which is the Lyric's first offsite production on May 2, while Edinburgh Fringe hit Wish I had a Sylvia Plath will be shown in OMAC on the same night at 8.00pm. A strong literature line-up includes the feminist icon Germaine Greer discussing her latest book 'Shakespeare's Wife' on May 5 in the Black Box and Belfast writer Patricia Craig gives an account of religion, family and growing up in Belfast and Donegal in the 1950s on the following afternoon. Add in an entire weekend of circus and street theatre, visual art, sound and Vvsion and numerous tours, talks, debates and free events and Belfast is poised to enjoy a truly world class festival of arts and culture. The Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival runs from May 1-12, 2008, full details are available at www.cqaf.com (DW)
