Relaxing Dining In Cloth Ear
Downtown Belfast now boasts many places to eat, drink (and even be merry too!) but which to try out….given that three decades of enforced Trouble's "gloom" has now given way to virtually being spoilt for choice?
Alongside the ornate Merchant Hotel’s particular brand of classic architecture - boasting an interior dome that rivals that of Belfast's own City Hall - stands the oddly named, Cloth Ear, the main establishment's own public bar.
Offering a range of food and mid-week special offers a visit for dinner - in what was formerly the headquarters of the Ulster Bank - need not break the bank, despite the opulence of the main building (and its room prices!).
Most evenings there's a pleasant mix of - mostly - the over 25s and more than a few folk a good deal older - who will most certainly remember the premises original incarnation.
Food is served by pleasant, efficient staff in what is rightly described by the proprietors as a "warm and welcoming interior", which does indeed provide an ideal environment to relax and even enjoy the weekly entertainment programme with the likes of a pub quiz to live traditional music on offer on different nights.
However, it is in the surroundings that the Cloth Ear surprises, with many unique items of vintage and antique clothing, a wooden moose and deer heads and the classic 1930’s – 1950’s sheet music that adorn the walls, just to admire while waiting.
But to the food….while there's an all day menu featuring homemade “comfort” food, from Macaroni cheese with field mushrooms to lamb shank served with a potato and parsnip gratin, every day, the evening menu 'special' proved to be the draw.
A couple can enjoy a bottle of (good) wine and a main course each that doesn't hit the wallet too hard, at just under £23.
There's a choice of (rather fancy) traditional fish and chips - mushy peas and very nice chips included - or chicken, beef or lamb as well as other daily specials.
Just a few pounds more on the bill for the rib eye steak may be worth it for the big meat-eater, but either way, the food comes fresh cooked, with a range of vegetables and served in an unassuming, unpretentious manner that aids after-work relaxation.
Worth a try? Certainly, offering good value in really comfortable surroundings…..however…just across the road, and for just £2 more, the Pott House is doing a similar mid-week deal, but with two courses instead of one….worth trying too!
Oh! The wonders of a competitive market!
