Chinese Tao-Go
There are all different kinds of places to eat in Belfast. There are the snooty uptight members only restaurants, ostentatious eateries, garish grill rooms, shabby stakehouses, and greasy greasy spoons.
But where do you go if you just want to relax, take a load off, and have something nice to eat without having to sell a Big Issue or two just to afford a taxi home?
The Dublin Road and it's parallel sister, Great Victoria Street are slowly but surely becoming something resembling Manchester's famed 'curry mile' on which each side of the street is shoulder-to-shoulder curry houses for, well - almost a mile.
So finding which of the many restaurants to dabble your oriental fancy in could pose a bit a quandary. If it’s a laid back feel you’re looking for, then look no further than Tao. Inside has a warm and cosy feel to it, with lots of reds, wooden panels and glass. The atmosphere is relaxed, and although the décor is not obviously Chinese, there are just just enough hints at oriental stoicism to remind you where you are.
The staff are exceptionally friendly and courteous, and the food is punctual with a good range to choose from.
But every ying has its yang, and despite Tao's excellently prepared vegetables, some of the food won't be filling your taste receptors with breathtaking Chinese authenticity. However, that is not to say the food isn't pleasant, which on the whole it is.
Although not overly impressed with my satay duck, the meals enjoyed by my compatriots, such as the sweet chilly chicken strips and hoi sin dishes were testament enough to the chef's abilities.
What takes the fortune cookie though is the exceptionally reasonable prices, which will leave you as happy as the smiling Buddha. Most meals come in at under a tenner, and you can bring your own. Cheap as curry chips!
