| | Pearl Jam Gems. | | | | I've always been a huge Pearl Jam (pictured) fan since my teens as they sat unattainably on my top five bands to see before I die list. Could a tribute act satiate my ambitions? The Spring and Airbrake was dark and well populated, but not exactly heaving. The crowd ranged from aging die-hard Pearl Jam lovers adorned with tour T-Shirts, a few people that had heard Alive on Jools Holland and came down for the craic, and a couple of emo girls who looked like they had turned up on the wrong night. I didn't know what to expect from the Pearl Jem tribute band, I was joined by two friends I'd known since my teens with whom I'd spent countless hours discussing the band's famous bridge during their version of Porch unplugged; Eddies part in the band's change of direction during Vitalogy; the influence of their time as Temple of the Dog; Eddie’s progression as a guitar player; Mike McCready’s tone and its similarity to Stevie Ray Vaughn; their frequency of use of e-bows in recent albums; the reflective subtexts in Riot Act; the models of guitar each member uses; which drummer has been the best; the cross over of subject matter between albums such as P-R-I-V-A-C-Y and In My Tree; their involvement in politics and World Wide Suicide's blatant message, their record sales; how they met; is Eddie still Pro-Choice?… in short, we knew the band inside out. At least, we thought we did… Within the first 15 minutes Pearl Jem had played two songs not one of us had ever heard before. This was indeed a shock, as between us we probably knew the words and guitar parts to every song on every album. The band certainly didn't look much like the Seattle grungers, although by closing your eyes, forgiving a little, you could've been temporarily fooled. What impressed the most was the band's performance in their own right as opposed to their faithfulness to the original band. There was plenty of bounding around the stage, and smiling and singing along by the non-singing members of the six strong outfit. Highlight of the night was easily Alive, not personally my favourite song, but it galvanised the mass who had started to lose interest in the more esoteric numbers, which had left the crowd looking at each other, trying to place the track. Overall however, the band were into it, the crowd were into it, the songs sounded great, and although no one can ever replicate Eddie's unmistakable voice, Pearl Jem gave it a damn good shot, and we all had fun watching them try.
