| | Chilli Best | | | | I went for chilli, and ended up talking to a Swedish band about the influences of punk. Chilli is some strange stuff... The Chillifest in Custom House Square is in its second year now and has been surprisingly popular despite Northern Ireland's traditionally austere tastes. Perhaps Chillifest is part of the vanguard for the ongoing food revolution, leading to exotic eateries popping into existence throughout the city… probably not, but Chillies are a lot more popular than I had ever envisaged. The Festival was half open air and half tucked into a gaping white tent, with the outside chilli, chocolate, and even chilli and chocolate stalls funnelling patrons into the dimly lit inner venue where a hot food bar, and beer stall framed the distant stage. Bluegrass stomping, and southern Americana melodies belted from the stage in CD quality. The aforementioned music however was not emanating from some spinning plastic, as on stage were four slightly strange looking men with ragtime instruments all singing into the one microphone in an Oh Brother Where Art Thou style, and suddenly my little cardboard pot of chillied pork and beans started to make sense. The band ran through some pretty hefty bluegrass tunes, with lyrics that would evoke a blush as quickly as a nod to their roots. After alighting the stage, I grabbed an opportunity to talk with The Rockridge Brothers and prepared my best southern "howdy" – just in case. But instead of a "y'all" I was first greeted with a "hejsan" as these hillbillies were from the outback, old country redneck hick bible belt of Sweden. It seems hillbilly bluegrass is a big deal in Sweden and much loved, according to the tall, and mostly blonde, foursome. The band was once a punk outfit that toured around Sweden before giving it up and delving into Bluegrass. It also seems, bluegrass and punk are not so far removed, with a similar tempo, and equally irreverent lyrical comment, which we discerned after some discussion. The day of unusual pairings continued as the 'who can eat the hottest chilli' competition was won by to teenage girls. They say some very strong chillies can be hallucinogenic, and I just wonder how many people left that day believing a word their eyes were telling them.
