Anarchic Monkeys
It's sadly inevitable that a band that achieves popular success in the way the Arctic Monkeys have are quickly deserted by critics and esoteric-music fans.
It's not that surprising though, the band have been to varying degrees, have been like radio one wall paper for the past year or so, and that always pisses people off.
The bandwagon started to load up against them as a few critics got laid in. First they were accused of releasing an EP too soon after their album, then of taking the mick out of the Brit Academy (quite rightly in my opinion), and more recently of contributing to the "volume wars" by over compressing their songs to give them higher volume during radio play.
But, and it's a fairly significant but, the band have thwarted further critical attack by putting the production of the latest album, Humbug, in the hands of the respected Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme. Whether it'll be a successful parry for musical integrity remains to be seen, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.
Of course, if you want to protect your street credentials, you can always just say you only wanted to see Eagles of Death Metal anyway.
Arctic Monkeys appear with special guests Eagles Of Death Metal at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast on 25 November. Tickets £32.50.
