Five star luxury at one of NI's top hotels, the Gold Coast's Culloden Hotel, is attracting increasing numbers of cross border visitors. Special offers and a strong Euro are helping provide a fillip for trade as the busy festive season approaches. But leaving aside the acclaimed hotel bedrooms - and especially the plush suites - and the ambience of the former bishop's palace, now complemented with a state-of-the-art Spa facility, what's the dining experience like? The Mitre restaurant is the fine dining choice, with superb service and menu, but the more casual customer can also enjoy fine food and service at the Cultra Inn. That's a tastefully converted gatehouse in the grounds, (pictured) which offers 'pub-style' food in a less formal setting. Main courses are varied, with one choice selected by many: Fish & Chips, (£10). The fish is whiter-than-white, is fresh, tasty and done to perfection in a crisp, light batter, while the chips and sauce, (severed in separate dishes) and the pea puree (mushy peas) is delightful. However, for a bit more, the 10oz Sirloin Steak (£17) is a treat worth trying, with onion rings, potato wedges and cracked black pepper sauce, again served in separate dishes to allow mix-and-match as suits individual tastes also proves a fine choice. Add a bottle of good wine, (around £17 or so), and there's a great meal experience for two for a total of just £50, and all in comfortable, relaxing surroundings. For those seeking lighter fare, the starters menu doubles as a 'light bite' choice, with selections from £4.50, although the Chicken Caesar Salad is also magnificent and highly recommended.
