Along with the other big hitting tickets going on sale this month – and just in time for Christmas incidentally, what a coincidence! – are probably the biggest band to hit Belfast since, well since… um… since, er… Pearl Jam are maybe the biggest band ever to come to Belfast and will be hitting our shores next June. The founding fathers, or at least the most prolific purveyors, of the grunge movement, Pearl Jam are in a number of enviable positions. For a start, the band are simply incapable of losing their fans no matter how hard they try, and you would be forgiven for thinking they've done everything in their power to make that happen. After laying waste to the American classic rock scene in the early 90s with their album Ten, Pearl Jam began exhibiting little anti-industry ticks that would soon develop into full scale episodes that would rock the entire music industry. First the band sent their label and fans crazy by refusing to make any more music videos, despite Jeremy winning four awards at the MTV Video Music Awards. Next the band started refusing interviews and television appearances, and that's when things started getting nasty. Soon Pearl Jam were boycotting Ticketmaster which, in case you didn't know, is like a flat pack furniture company boycotting Ikea. Next the enigmatic and occasionally surreal third album Vitalogy hit the shelves as an almost complete departure from their previous work, with alienating themes and shaking the faith of Vs and Ten fans. But, six monumentally different albums later, despite engaging in political campaigns, drummer changes and some 18 years of playing under their belt, Pearl Jam still boast one of the largest and most loyal fan bases of any other rock band in the world. Pearl Jam appear at the Odyssey Arena on June 22. Tickets are £41.50 on sale Friday 11th December at 9am.
