The Lisburn road in Belfast is probably the closest thing the North has to Rodeo Drive in Los Angelas. It's where the 'it' girls go to be seen in their fancy cars, while their well groomed, jumper-tied-around-their-neck fiancés try to impress the father law (who just happens to be the judge in their own father's ongoing company tax evasion proceedings). There are two delicatessens for every designer furniture shop, so it's a relief a bit of reality has plonked itself in the middle of all this pretension. Kookys, just beside Ryan's bar at the road's city end, is a neat little café that's full of character, as the name would suggest. Wavy mirrors and surrealist art give the glass fronted establishment a welcoming interior, while said glass front provides a beautifully framed vantage point to watch the world go by and mock the passing socialites. Meanwhile, a black Christmas tree added a little spark of unconventional taste that suited the leftfield atmosphere well. The regular readers of this column are probably familiar with my hamburger-philia, so it's no great surprise that I took my road most travelled by. Meanwhile, being a vegetarian, my lucky lunch partner this month was able to cast some light from that alien perspective for all you veggies out there by opting for the beanburger. Usually in these reviews I offer the occasional little pearl for the little potential restaurateurs among you, and here is this months. Never underestimate the importance of a good side dish. My burger came with some quite astonishing chunky garlic potatoes, while my associate's accompanying side salad was crisp and rinsed in a tangy fresh red wine vinaigrette and sesame seeds. This small attention to detail gave both meals a steady starting block from which both vegetarian and carnivorous burgers could begin at pace. The relaxed atmosphere, excellent service and great food, for both veges and meat eaters, is the relief this road needs. So while all around you are emptying their bank accounts in pompous establishments along the same road, take solice in this sanctuary for the sane.
