Stomp Energises Waterfront
Lambeg drummers and members of the Hounds of Ulster (Google them!) will be lining up for the Belfast Waterfront's production of Stomp - a unique combination of theatre, dance, comedy and percussion - which opened last night (Tuesday).
With not a word of dialogue for the entire length of the (almost) two hour, non-stop performance, the eight performers use boots, bins, brooms and everything, including the kitchen sink, (complete with water) to hammer out an explosively feel good rhythm, which had the near capacity audience enthralled from the opening entrance by a broom-pushing 'Wally' - who immediately drew the sympathy of every lady in the house.
Such is the power of this West End 'musical' now on tour, that no actual musical instruments are employed - instead it is inflated inner tyre tubes, west Belfast-style bin lids and lengths of industrial hose, and even plastic bags - that hammer out the endless rhythm.
The highlight - apart from what appeared to be a female member of the audience flashing her boobs at the aforementioned 'Wally' character - was the upper level action.
Here members of the cast hang suspended from harnesses and vigorously attack the set's innumerable wheel hubs, tin pots and empty tins to beat out their own brand of pulsating music.
If there's any criticism, then it's this section, which could have been longer being the most impressive of the 110 minutes of non-stop action.
Other than that, don't miss the encore…..and save some energy for the prolonged standing ovation too.
Stomp runs at the Belfast Waterfront until Sunday, 24th.
