In Belfast there's a saying 'Maradona good; Pelé better - George Best' and what greater tribute to the football legend than to open a musical dedicated to the NI soccer hero than in his hometown. Dancing Shoes - The George Best Story, written by Martin Lynch and Marie Jones tells the story of Best's dazzling skill on the pitch, and his champagne lifestyle away from it. The musical's title hints at the ex-Manchester United star's renowned lightness of foot which he often used to outwit defenders on the pitch. Music and songs written by musicians Pat Gribben and JJ Gilmour guide the audience through the heart-wrenching journey of a boy kicking a tennis ball against a gable wall on the Cregagh estate in east Belfast to a man living a life of fame, fortune and controversy. The leading role is played by Co Tyrone's Aidan O'Neill, a 29-year-old actor who not only captures the physicality of Best but also the essence of his character. The musical doesn't place Best on a pedestal, you witness alcoholism plaguing his mind, body and relationships. In one scene, rich with Belfast's dark humour, snooker champ Alex Higgins visits George Best in hospital. It is a true story and a poignant scene but the writers managed to bring a smile to the audiences faces as they sing We Had A Ball. This tribute to a lovable rogue (pictured with one of his many ladies) is not to be missed. (GK/BMcC)
