Interview with local makers of new horror, The Last Light - Part 2
by James Gracey

Here is the second part of The Last Light interview with director of the locally made horror, George Clarke and its leading actor Robert Render. Enjoy!

Was it a difficult shoot?
Clarke: The shoot was 12 hours a day for 12 days, and was very long and very draining, but a lot of fun. Our only lighting used off-camera was some lamps powered by a marine battery, torches and an iPad. When we were shooting, Robert’s character uses a torch for a short period of time before moving on to a Zippo lighter and matches, with the flame creating some amazing shots.
Render: It was quite a physical shoot. A lot of walking, climbing, falling, running, slipping and more walking! A lot of the floors were so damp and degraded, they would almost give way underneath you, so you had to be alert at all times as to where you were going and where you were stepping. Our safety was always the first priority though.
How did you feel making the film, which was based on true events, in the actual house where the events allegedly took place? And how did you go about recreating these events?
Clarke: During the investigations I took down quite a few notes about the sightings and hauntings experienced. In the paranormal world, there is an investigation method called the Singapore Theory, where the investigators would play music or sounds from a particular era they expected the spirits to be from. With this experiment I wanted to recreate a dramatisation of that exact event in that exact location to see what it triggered and we definitely experienced a few things because of this.
Render: It was a strange feeling. You see a lot of movies saying that they are inspired by true events, and in this movie, we are actually recreating scenes that mediums and investigators have said have actually happened in the house. I cannot say I would believe everything a medium says, however if you believe that what they say is true, then recreating the scene is really quite a bold statement. The quest now, is to see whether anything was actually caught on tape! We shall see.
Any odd occurrences while filming?
Clarke: Actress Jo Crawford and I were in the kitchen - a place I had previously experienced negative things and found the character of ‘Alexander’, who appears in our film. After I had explained his past to her and she cursed him for bullying the women staff, she began feeling a pushing sensation on our way out. When she told me to keep walking because she felt someone was behind us, I turned back to look and saw a shadow of a man - at least 6,4 in height, standing over us. I believe it was Alexander. It was amazing!
Render: I am a sceptic, but I am open-minded. I would love to experience, or see something to make me believe. Unfortunately, I always see too many reasons to explain things.
Any films that influenced what you have tried to do with The Last Light?
Clarke: I tried hard to avoid watching anything that was along the same lines; movies like Buried, House on Haunted Hill, The Grudge etc, so I wouldn't get any ideas implanted. The idea of doing a classic ghost story had always played on my mind. I'm a massive fan of the old Hammer flicks, and horrors from yesteryear, so once I had this location confirmed I knew just what I wanted to do.
