Competition: T-Shirt Bearing It's Arms
There are few items of clothing more universal than the T-shirt. All ages, all sexes, the T-shirt is increasingly bearing arms, clothing most of the world for the past 30 years.
The printed T-shirt is its most iconic form and now an accepted cultural icon, the cuirass of the counter culture. Now, a local company is taking the garment's vestige of influence on an ideological sortie, to a subversive non-corporate beacon.
Lighthouse Industries tagged their company with the strap line of "daring, deviant, vital, hand-printed, T-shirts" and that's exactly what they produce.
Formed by a picky T-shirt obsessive, the company is vigorously independent, taking no funding from Invest NI or the Arts Council despite the constant recessional knocks.
Thought up beside the seaside in Donaghadee, the husband and wife run company creates and prints all their wares in Northern Ireland with a DIY ethos and focus on abstract designs.
The company has also taken long strides to create a welcoming website with a few laughs and a bit of mystery, featuring deliberately alternative photography and models.
"This is a start, a jumping off point, and there is more to come," owner Neal Sutherland told us, "There is even better on the horizon; we've had some props already from t-shirt blogs like Tee Hunter, The Tee Directory, Hide Your Arms and Shirts of Satan. We've featured in trade clothing magazine MWB as one of 'the best printed t-shirts' in late summer and our T-shirts have been worn by Alan Simpson [Radio Ulster] and Paul McClean [BBC's ATL] to name but a few."
