Foy Vance On His Bushmills' Brothers
Bushmills Irish Whiskey launched its new 'Brothers - Since Way Back' campaign on Thursday, which began with a surprise performance in the city centre.
The campaign is taking local artists and facilitating their collaborations to create new projects and works, and sees the likes of former Snow Patrol guitarist Ian Archer join the band's official photographer Bradley Quinn on new projects.
Meanwhile, fresh from his appearance with Snow Patrol on Jools Holland, singer-songwriter Foy Vance joined with Mark 'Mash' Ashbridge of Communion Belfast, to launch the campaign with an impromptu busk in front of a large crowd who made there way after seeing leaks on Facebook and Twitter.
The Big List caught up the Foy for a quick chat about the campaign and how things were going in the world of Foy.
Did you ever busk in Belfast, or do you ever miss it?
I did, yeah. I wasn't as completely committed as some of the other guys out there. I used to do a bit with my mates, but then I just and decided to take the guitar home and play to myself in my room. But it was good when I did it and we always met some interesting people out there.
Tell us about the Bushmills Brothers campaign.
Well, first and foremost, I've always been a fan of Bushmills, I used to drink it with my daddy back in the day. So my friends would always drink it and we decided to get together and do something, so we got together with Bushmills.
You're also playing Belfast Music Week in the Ulster Hall. Is that a venue you enjoy playing?
It's a good gig, and I'm really looking forward to it. I've played there a couple of times and it's always been good fun.
That gig is in the run up to the EMAs. There's some debate about whether they will be such a good thing. What do you think about them?
I haven't really thought about that too much. I'm more into what's happening in Belfast. We've never had a proper musical infrastructure, although we have produced amazing people like Stiff Little Fingers and Van Morrison, so I'm more concerned about that. I haven't really thought if it's a good thing or a bad thing or if they're taking advantage, but it's an opportunity to show a lot of people what's happening in Belfast.
You're also up for best solo male at the first Northern Ireland Music Awards…
Do you not have to have done something for that? [laughs] It's not really what we're trying to achieve here but it's a very nice thing. Music's not a competition and not in the spirit of music here. Recording with other people and playing on their records, supporting other artists, that's what it's all about. Unless I win of course.
