Throwing Shapes In The Limelight
"Where has all the math rock gone?" I hear you ponder. I know, I know, I've been asking the same question, but this November, the Limelight has heard our inter-cranial calls and put on a spectacular showcase for us math rock addicts.
Headlining the night will be the angular, shouty antics of Shapes. The band first launched in January 2008, going on to tour widely and record with some impressive industry figures.
In 2009, the label Big Scary Monsters added Shapes to their impressive roster with whom the band released their EP entitled The Pasture, The Oil in May 2009 mastered by Alan Douches (Converge, Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Rapture, Fallout Boy).
Last year Shapes toured alongside GlassJAw and Pulled Apart By Horses, before booking in to Tonteknik Studios in Umea, Sweden to record their debut full-length album with legendary producer Eskil Lovstrom, famed for his work with Refused, Poison The Well, In Flames, Hell Is For Heroes, Meshuggah and more.
Before Shapes will be Belfast / Galway three piece Eatenbybears. Only formed last year, they quickly recorded their first two single releases, the spooky and minimalist Vanderhoof and the bouncy blunderbuss that is Spite Houses, both of which attracted thumbs up from the likes of Glasvegas and And So I Watch You From Afar.
The fabulously named &U&I is the third member of the crack math triptych. Formed by former members of established band Blakfish, &U&I have a melodic and spiky approach to time that mixes elements of funk and rock to create dazzlingly unstable melodies that keep you guessing.
Shapes / Eatenbybear and &U&I play the Limelight on Thursday November 10. Tickets £6, doors 7.30pm.
