Peter Hook - The Bass Of The Song
By Damien Whinnery

Some musicians just define their role and Peter Hook is one of those musicians.
The former Joy Division and New Order legend, Peter plays the bass like a lead guitar, pulling the hook of the song from the weighty instrument's thick strings and cumbersome frets.

Yeah, Bootsy Collins is technically better; yeah OK, Les Claypool is more innovative; right fine, Flea is more iconic, Mike Watt has done more, and Alex James has nicer hair, but Peter Hook has something none of those guys have.
His bass playing does the opposite to the typical. Instead of hanging in the back, driving the song along and adding depth, Peter's lines permeate everything. Like a stick through a bicycle wheel, everything must revolve around his quick bass riffs or nothing moves.
Peter Hook was a co-founder of the post-punk band Joy Division along with Bernard Sumner in the mid-1970s. Following the death of lead singer Ian Curtis, the band reformed as New Order, which gave Hook a platform to roam around in innovative songs and build his style from scratch.
But it's Joy Division's classic debut album Unknown Pleasures which will be star of the show, being performed in full, as well as tracks from their seminal second album Closer and a whole host of other Joy Division & New Order tracks.
Peter Hook & The Light perform “Unknown Pleasures”, A Joy Division Celebration in it's entirety at the Spring & Airbrake on Saturday June 9. Entry is at 8pm. Tickets are on sale now, available from www.ticketmaster.ie.
