| | Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny | | | | Stars: Jack Black, Kyle Gass Cert: 15 Running Time: 94 mins |
| | There's no doubting that those Tenacious D boys - Jack Black and Kyle Gass - are funny guys. With their hilarious videos, witty - but still rockin' - tunes like 'Tribute' and 'F**k Her Gently', they could have a justifiable claim to being the Spinal Tap for the 21st century.... However, their first movie outing 'The Pick of Destiny' proves disappointing - largely because it fails to live up the quality of the duo's previous output... The movie tells the story of how JB (Black) meets KG (Gass) and forms the Mighty D. The film's opening sequence is impressive, showing a young JB (a hilariously spot-on Jack Black impression from Troy Gentile) rebelling against his strict daddy (a great cameo from Meatloaf). After some rockin' words of wisdom from none other than Heavy Metal Dwarf Ronnie James Dio, JB is inspired to become a rock star and, as an adult, heads to Venice Beach and meets with KG. The pair soon hatch plans to become rock superstars, and look set to achieve their aims when news of a mysterious guitar pick, that could help increase their talents, reaches their ears... The problem with 'The Pick of Destiny' is that after its hilarious opening sequence, it seems happy to settle into being merely average, coasting along on the constant mugging of Jack Black (something he's been doing more and more recently, in movies such as 'Nacho Libre') and a succession of jokes, which clearly Black, Gass and Liam Lynch (who directed and co-scripted) find funnier than anyone else... Sure, there's a few funny lines, some great musical numbers and some decent cameos from the likes of Ben Stiller and Tim Robbins, which will no doubt keep hardcore D fans chortling happily, but for newcomers or a more demanding audience, there's precious little to get excited about and most of this section of the audience will be left wondering just what justified all the hype... The movie limps along in a fairly average way and by the time the conclusion rolls around with a face-off against the Devil (Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl reprising his role from the videos), what should be the highlight of the film is a disappointing damp squib... Overall, 'Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny' could have been and should have been funnier, but there's still enough in there to justify taking a look. Just.
