Hot Fuzz

Certificate: 15
Running Time: 124 mins
Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Timothy Dalton, Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine
Following up the success of 'rom-zom-com' 'Shaun of the Dead' was always going to be a difficult proposition, but Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright seem to have managed it admirably with buddy cop action comedy 'Hot Fuzz'...
Pegg stars as PC Nick Angel, a Metropolitan police officer who is so good at his job that he's sent off to a sleepy Somerset village instead, because he's making all the other coppers look bad. Initially, when he arrives, it seems that nothing ever happens in the village and he's in for a boring time... However, while there are no murders or violent incidents, the village does have a high count of mysterious accidents - could the village's smarmy supermarket boss (Timothy Dalton) have something to do with them?
The film opens decently enough, introducing a variety of supporting characters with their own individual quirks. Frost is merely covering old ground, merely playing Ed from 'Shaun...' in a police uniform, but he is always hilarious and has perfect natural comic chemistry with Pegg, who manages to pull off a straight man role, which is unusual for him.
Other notable mentions have to go to Paddy Considine and Rafe Spall as a couple of sarky detectives and Dalton who has a ball with his smarmy role as the potential villain of the piece.
However, the mid-section undeniably drags before we reach the hilarious climax with a fantastic shoot-out in a supermarket, which references a number of classic action movies (the nod to 'Point Break' is a particular highlight).
Overall, it's not as immediately funny and appealing as 'Shaun of the Dead', but 'Hot Fuzz' is certain to feature as one of the year's funniest movies regardless...
