Fresh appeal in German backpacker murder
Detectives investigating the local murder in April 1988 of German backpacker Inga Marie Hauser are to make a fresh appeal about her death on BBC Crimewatch next week.
The programme, which is going out on July 13, reveals a new police theory that Inga Marie was not alive in Northern Ireland for up to eleven days before her death, but was likely to have been murdered within a short time of arriving here.
Inga Marie had travelled to Northern Ireland onboard the Galloway Princess ferry and the police investigation is now focusing on her journey aboard the boat before she arrived.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Pat Steele said: “Police now believe that Inga Marie was murdered within a short time of arriving in Northern Ireland, and we are now looking in even greater detail at her journey here on board the Galloway Princess.
“We are re-visiting many of the passengers who were interviewed as part of the initial investigation in the light of new information. In particularly we'll be speaking to motorists who would have been onboard the Sealink sailing from Stranraer on the April 6 1988.”
Ms Hauser, who was 18 and from Munich, had travelled to meet with a friend in Cardiff, but decided to go to Scotland and Northern Ireland while in Britain.
Her body was found in a shallow grave in a forest on the outskirts of Ballycastle on April 21.
