HSE To Cut €400M From Budget
The Health Service Executive has announced that a further €400 million may be needed to be made in budget cuts next year.
The figure comes on the heels of a previous €530 million in savings that have already been proposed, leading to almost €1 billion in total cuts being made for 2009.
Reviews will also be undertaken of 11 emergency units in Dublin and Cork following the publication of the HSE's National Service Plan for this year, which outlined the cuts.
The revelations tell a foreboding tale, as the Government prepares to unveil its plan for economic activity. A framework for recovery is expected before Christmas, which is expected to contain a plan to reinvigorate the Irish economy.
At a meeting in Government Buildings yesterday, Brian Cowen met with employers, unions, farming and social organisations to discuss the state of public finances. At the meeting the Taoiseach told the delegates that public finances were at '05 levels, and asked for submissions on how the crisis could best be tackled.

Hundreds of women along with their families and friends have united in their protest against any cuts to the Domino Midwife Maternity Service at WGH. The HSE plan to severely cut the cost saving service. The Domino Midwifery Service runs antenatal clinics and offers continuity of care for mothers.

Ireland Rises In Global Competitiveness
Ireland has risen three places in the latest World Economic Forum Global Competitive Index to 25th, its best ranking since 2009, the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation has announced. The Global Competitiveness Report was launched in 1979 by Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum.
