Country homes to adopt 'cutting-edge' architecture
New country houses will reflect the highest standards of contemporary architecture following a change to planning policy, it has been announced today.
The face of new country house architecture will change from a "pastiche of historic styles" to innovative cutting-edge design to encourage the best of British architecture, according to Planning Minister Keith Hill.
The move seeks to encourage innovative design, modern methods of construction and use of sustainable building materials. It will also encourage developments that have a reduced impact on environmental resources.
He added: "We want to encourage the best British architects to design country houses that our future generations will be proud of - creating buildings that people will want to visit in a 100 years time.
"Not only do we hope that cutting-edge designs for country houses will raise the standards of rural housing more widely, we also expect them to leave a legacy from today's top architects for the history books of the future."
Architect Lord Norman Foster said the announcement was "wonderful news".
"It is good for both rural and national interests and should be welcomed by everyone," he said.

A teacher left paralysed following an accident involving a Wellington boot has lost his claim for more than £5m in damages. 45-year-old Glennroy Blair-Ford was on a school trip in Devon when he broke his neck while taking part in a sporting event commonly known as ‘welly wanging’.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is seeking political asylum at Ecuador's London embassy. The South American country says it is "studying and analysing the request". This follows after last weeks rejection by the UK’s Supreme Court of Mr Assange's bid to reopen an appeal against extradition to Sweden over alleged sex crimes.

Boys Held Over Fawn's Death
Three boys have been arrested in relation to the apparent brutal killing of a newborn deer in a country park in Dorset. Three teenagers were seen to pick up the fawn, throw it to the ground and take turns to stamp on it in Upton Country Park. Dorset Police arrested two 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old all from Poole.

Police Extend 'Dangerous' Man Hunt Nationwide
Police have put airports and ports on alert as the hunt for a man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 66-year-old man in Hertfordshire on Saturday. 55-year-old John McLoughlin has been described as "dangerous" and is wanted in connection with the death of Graham Buck, who was killed after he intervened in a robbery at a neighbours house.
