Pope in stable condition in hospital
According to the Vatican, Pope John Paul II's condition has stabilised, but the 84-year-old pontiff who was taken to Rome's Gemelli hospital has required medical treatment for a respiratory condition overnight.
Pope John Paul II developed breathing difficulties after a bout of flu became more serious. In a statement the Vatican said that it was expected that the Pope would remain in hospital for a "few days".
Despite a slight fever, the Pontiff participated in Mass from his hospital bed on Wednesday morning. A Vatican spokesperson said that there was no cause for alarm and appealed for calm.
However, there has been concern at the worsening health of Pope John Paul II because of his age and related health problems - he suffers from Parkinson's disease and has arthritis.
The Pope, who had been suffering from flu, was rushed to hospital by ambulance, suffering from a laryngeal-spasm – a condition that can block the passage of air to the lungs, making it almost impossible to breath.
Appointed Pope in 1978, Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was one of the longest serving pontiffs and at just 58 was the youngest Pope to be chosen by the College of Cardinals in over a century.
Catholic church leaders for England and Wales Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor and Scotland Cardinal Keith O'Brien led prayers today in Westminster Cathedral and Edinburgh for the ailing pontiff during the celebration of Mass.
The Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, said special prayers would be said during Mass throughout Ireland for Pope John Paul II today.

Two million expected to pay tribute to the Pope
Around two million people are expected to flock to Rome to pay tribute to the late Pope John Paul II, ahead of his funeral, which will take place on Friday morning. The body of the 84-year-old pontiff, who died on Saturday, will lie in state from this afternoon at St Peter's Basilica and members of the public will be able to pay their respects.

Pope John Paul II is in a "very grave" condition, the Vatican confirmed on Friday, as fears grow over his increasingly frail health. The 84-year-old pontiff, who was treated in hospital twice in February after suffering from breathing problems, developed a high fever, caused by a urinary tract infection, last night.
