Rabbit cruelty man sentenced

A man who threw a rabbit into an alligator pool at a zoo has been given a six-month suspended jail sentence.

Damien French, 20, was found guilty of animal cruelty at Llandudno Magistrates Court.

The court heard how French had taken the rabbit from a petting section at the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, north Wales, last October. He then dropped it into the alligator pool, where a large male alligator called Albert killed it.

Chairman of the Bench Alan Roberts said: "These are serious cases and deserve a custodial sentence.

"You will be committed to prison for a period of six months and that sentence will be suspended for a period of 12 months."

French was also placed under a 12-month supervision order and banned from keeping animals for 10 years.
