Rape Case Accused Remanded

A 23-year-old Tyrone man has been remanded in custody charged with the rape and attempted murder of a woman at the weekend.

The accused appeared at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday morning over an incident that is alleged to have happened on the Old Castle Road in Newtownstewart early on Saturday.

During the brief hearing, a detective constable said he believed the accused, Christopher Anthony Doherty, who is from Newtownstewart, could be connected to the charges.

The man's legal representative said that attempts were being made to find him alternative accommodation.

He would then be making a bail applicaiton, he explained, as Mr Doherty lives close to the alleged victim.

There will be a further hearing at Strabane Court via video link next week.
