Royal Navy withdraw from search for missing fishing vessel
The Royal Navy have decided to withdraw HMS Bridport, the minesweeper which has been assisting in the search for missing Kilkeel fishing vessel the Tullaghmurray Lass.
The search, which has been underway for 11 days, has involved dozens of local vessels and both Irish and Royal Navy ships, but has failed to discover any trace of the boat or the three members of the Greene family who were aboard.
Eight-year-old Michael Greene, his 32-year-old father and 54-year-old grandfather, both also called Michael failed to return from a prawn fishing expedition. Ironically the trip was to have been the last before the boat was decommissioned.
Local search coordinator Charlie McBride has appealed for the Royal Navy to reverse the decision and continue the search until at least the weekend.
An Irish naval ship, Le Eithne, is expected to continue with the search, probing the route thought to have been taken by the Tullaghmurray Lass.
Three inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch in Southampton are currently in Kilkeel to investigate the mysterious loss of the fishing boat.
