Causeway Trust chief resigns over pay row

A top Northern Ireland health chief has resigned in a row over pay awards made to senior health executives.

Margaret Craig, Chairperson of the Causeway Health and Social Services Trust, was told by Stormont Health Minister Bairbre de Brún she had to go after agreeing performance pay deals above departmental guidelines.

The Health Minister said she had been working with trusts to agree performance pay awards for senior executives that would be fair, affordable and defensible.

"Regrettably, the Causeway Trust did not follow my request for moderation in the award of performance pay," she said.

"A letter was issued to all Trusts last year asking them not to make any performance pay assessments until Departmental guidance was issued. Causeway Trust disregarded this and proceeded to make assessments. I have therefore had no alternative but to seek the resignation of the chair of the Causeway Trust, Mrs Margaret Craig."

The Minister added that as a result of public concern highlighted specifically by the Northern Ireland Assembly's Public Accounts Committee, she was determined to constrain the award of performance to more reasonable amounts.
