Prince Charles visits Northern Ireland

The Prince of Wales has arrived in Northern Ireland to undertake a series of engagements.

His first stop was to officially open the refurbished Great Hall in the historic Lanyon Building at Queen's University in Belfast.

He met students and staff and was greeted outside the main university building by the Lord Lieutenant of Belfast, Lord Chief Justice Sir Robert Carswell and Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers.

It is the Prince's 13th visit to Northern Ireland. The first was in 1961 and the last in 2000. His arrival also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Prince's Trust.

The Prince was met by University vice chancellor Sir George Bain and Employment and Learning Minister Carmel Hanna.

The Prince also visited the Northern Whig Building in Waring Street, in Belfast's city centre, later on Thursday.

He was greeted in the streets by thousands of well-wishers eager to get a chance to see the heir to the throne.
