The King’s Hall reports £200m local bonanza

The King’s Hall, through exhibitions and conferences, has generated more than £200million and 775 new jobs for the local economy over the past ten years, according to a report published January 8, 2002.

The Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (RUAS) which owns the landmark south Belfast venue, said most of the ‘New Pounds’ have come from delegates visiting the city from Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland and Europe.

The Economic Impact Report, compiled by KPMG, is a ten year study of the fiscal benefits that the King’s Hall brings to the local economy. It shows that the King’s Hall has created 365 jobs in Belfast and 595 jobs elsewhere in Northern Ireland, including full-time, part-time and contractual workers since 1990.

Philip Rees, Commercial Director for the King’s Hall said: “The report shows just how important the King’s Hall, a member of the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, continues to be to business tourism here in Northern Ireland. Although new venues have been established in recent years, none has comparable facilities to ours.

“As Northern Ireland’s largest exhibition venue, we play a lead role in attracting the major exhibitions, and their subsequent visitors and new pounds.”

‘New Pounds’ is a term used to describe money that is generated from business tourism, in this case through the attraction to Northern Ireland of large-scale exhibitions, that would not otherwise have been spent here. (GB)
