ICL rationalisation programme to affect 450 local jobs

IT solutions company, ICL has announced a rationalisation programme across its UK workforce, which will see reductions of up to 1,500 jobs.

As a result of these plans around 450 people in ICL’s Fujitsu plant in Belfast have been offered voluntary redundancy.

ICL said they were taking this latest measure “because of disappointing business results against the backdrop of adverse market conditions affecting the IT industry, as a whole”.

The statement added: “To date the Company has taken a number of measures to avoid job cuts, including a reduction in the number of contractors and temporary workers, and tight control of recruitment. In addition strict controls have been applied to operational and capital expenditure.”

The reductions will apply across the Group in the UK and are expected to be complete by March 2002.

Only last spring, Fujitsu announced a £29.4 million investment in Northern Ireland to create an engineering centre for advanced communication technology products.

ICL currently employs 17,700 people, of which 11,500 are UK-based. It designs, builds and operates IT systems & services in Europe, Middle East and Africa. (MB)
