Fermanagh Primary School Building Begins

Building work on a new primary school in County Fermanagh is now underway, with the NI Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane welcoming the development.

Being both a fillip for the parish of Aghadrumsee and for the local construction sector, the building of the new school opposite St Macartan's Church will facilitate the amalgamation of the existing Corranny Primary School, Knockmacrooney, Roslea and Cornagague Primary School, Magheraveely.

The Minister said: "This is a momentous day for Corranny and Cornagague Primary Schools. The start of construction work on their new amalgamated school building represents an investment of £1.58m by my Department in the future of this area and its community.

"Since taking office in May 2007, 50 major capital school projects have been completed. I have worked to raise standards in schools, both educational and in relation to providing good accommodation. I have spent the capital funding allocated to me and will continue to put the case for sustained funding for education," the Sinn Fein Minister said.

Elsewhere, the Minister also approved a development proposal for St Paul's Nursery School, Belfast, to close and re-open as a 52 full-time place Nursery Unit with effect from 1 September.

Commenting on the decision, Minister Ruane said: "Quality pre-school education can help the development of children and improve their social and communication skills. I wish the children attending St Paul's Nursery Unit well as they embark on this exciting journey which will provide them with a sound foundation for future success."
