Condemnations Follows Glengormley Shooting

The Mayor of Newtownabbey, Alliance Councillor Billy Webb, has condemned those involved in a shooting in the Mayfield area in which a man was shot in the stomach.

The 31-year-old victim has been left in a serious condition in hospital after being shot by two men who entered a house at Mayfield Court, Glengormley, at around 10pm on Wednesday.

They opened fire on the man who was shot in the stomach while a woman, who was also in the house at the time, escaped injury.

The Mayor, Cllr Billy Webb said: "This was a horrific and brutal attack. I hope the man injured in this despicable attack makes a full and swift recovery.

"It is absolutely appalling that someone could do something like this. Those who carry out acts of this nature must be brought to justice and I appeal to anyone with information on this incident to contact police immediately," he said.

Also commenting, the DUP South Antrim MLA, Pam Lewis has condemned those responsible.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information regarding the identity of those responsible for this gun attack to come forward.

"People capable of attacks like this are capable of doing it again. It is in all of our interests that such criminals are taken out of circulation," she said, this morning.

"The whole community has said very decisively that we do not want to be dragged backwards in to the days when such attacks were common-place.

"Whatever the circumstances, recourse to violence like this is completely unacceptable and outside the law.

"This incident could have resulted in a death: it is essential that everyone throughout the community works with the police to bring those responsible to justice," said the DUP Assembly Member.
