Mallon urges local businesses to embrace change

Deputy First Minister Séamus Mallon has spoken about the need for local businesses to embrace change and to identify new opportunities for growth and development.

Speaking in Newry at the launch of Clanrye Corporate Solutions, a new business training and consultancy service, the Minister said: "It is recognised that within the North of Ireland there is a need to encourage higher levels of enterprise and maximise the growth of small businesses. The initiative taken by Clanrye in offering tailored programmes of support, providing advice and assistance to new and existing small and medium sized businesses on a cross border basis, is to be welcomed.”

The Minister went on to stress that the Executive is working at a strategic level to encourage and support such business ventures, with particular focus on cross-border co-operation to ensure the economy of the island of Ireland benefits as a whole.

He said: "The new Trade and Business Development Body, Inter-Trade Ireland, based in Newry, has an important role to play in encouraging co-operation on business development opportunities; devising new approaches to business development in a cross border context; supporting businesses to increase enterprise competitiveness in a North South context in areas such as skill availabilities, telecoms, IT and electronic commerce and identifying new areas of trade between North and South."

Mr Mallon also paid tribute to Clanrye for the contribution it had made to Newry's social and economic development, and added:

"As a community based company, Clanrye has been in the forefront in providing programmes to equip people with the skills, knowledge and opportunities to gain employment. The contribution of its voluntary Board is immense and I would like to applaud them for their vision and ongoing commitment." (CL)
