Police escape injury in bomb attack

Three police officers came under bomb attack while investigating an incident in County Londonderry.

Two police cars were investigating reports of a burning car at Cornshell Fields in the Steelstown area at 12:30am on Wednesday morning when the explosion occurred.

As the second car passed, there was an explosion at the side of the road. The officers inside the second car were unhurt but suffered shock.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster on Wednesday, the Mayor of Derry, Councillor Mildred Garfield, said it was a deliberate murder attempt.

“At the end of the day the police are trying to police the community, irrespective of what side of the community that is and when they get a call to go out to something, they obviously have to answer that call,” she said.

“For someone to send for them and then to try and murder them is terrible. It is just deplorable and I would have to condemn it.”

The area has been cordoned off and army bomb experts were deployed to the scene.

Police say they are treating the attack as attempted murder.

Meanwhile two teenagers were shot in two separate paramilitary style attacks.

They were found in the garden of house in Springhill Drive in the west of the city at about 10.30pm on Tuesday September 11.

One of the youths, a 16-year-old, had been abducted from a house in New Barnsley Crescent on Sunday September 9. He was found with gunshot wounds to both ankles and a hand. The other youth was shot in the left ankle. (AMcE)
