Child Hurt In East Belfast Sectarian Attack

An east Belfast politician has condemned an incident in the area that police are treating as sectarian during which a young girl suffered an arm injury.

It took place at a house in Derwent Street on Monday and saw the young girl injured after a gang of men attacked a house with hammers.

The incident, near Dee Street, was reported shortly after 10pm to the PSNI who found that a man and a young girl were in the house at the time of the attack.

The girl received a cut to her forearm as a result of broken glass.

A PSNI statement said the police are treating the incident as sectarian.

Alliance's Chris Lyttle said: "This was an absolutely appalling attack. The whole community is in shock that a young child was injured during this incident.

"The fact that the police are treating this attack as sectarian is also extremely disturbing. My thoughts are with the girl that was injured and I hope that she makes a swift recovery," the MLA said

"This was an absolutely despicable incident and I appeal to anyone with information on it to contact police immediately so that those behind this can be quickly brought to justice."

Also today, the Sinn Fein MLA and Belfast Lord Mayor Niall O Donnghaile said he had spoken to the police and it was clear that the motivation was sectarian.

"Over 15 masked men attacked this young family in their own home, injuring a young child," he said.

The SDLP South Belfast MP Alasdair McDonnell has also condemned the attack: "I condemn this vicious attack and believe that such attacks have no place in society.

"All children have the right to safety within their own home and community.

"I urge anybody with information on this to give it to the police without delay," he said.
