Protestors gather as curtain is raised on ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

Approximately 50 protestors, including some from the Free Presbyterian Church, staged a protest outside Belfast’s Grand Opera House on Tuesday as the curtain was raised on the musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’.

The protestors gathered by the door branding the Tim Rice West End hit as blasphemous. However, the audience ignored the protest as they arrived for the show and seemed determined not to be put off at what was going on outside.

Free Presbyterian Minister Reverend Ian Brown, who was one of the many people protesting against the show, said that it was complete misrepresentation of Jesus Christ and that it was highly offensive to many Christians who had a right to protest and make their feelings known.

Theatre Director, Derek Nicholls, said that people who happened to think that the show was wrong were entitled to their own opinion. (CD)
