ORANGE ORDER TO TAKE PARADES COMMISSION TO COURT

THE Orange Order has announced it is to take the Northern Ireland Parades Commission to court.

The Order said it had instructed solicitors to instigate legal proceedings on the basis that Commission bans and restrictions of a number of its parades were in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The move comes in the light of the Northern Ireland Parades Commission decision to uphold their decision to ban most of the Londonderry’s Orange Lodge Parade from the Diamond area of the city centre.

The Orange order has a policy of not talking to the Commission, which it constantly brands “an unelected quango”.

The Orangemen also announced that on 12 July - the day Orangemen hold their major annual parades right across Northern Ireland - they would be launching a Covenant for Human Rights as part of its campaign for a restoration of their ''fundamental human rights''.

They said on that day they would be calling on all citizens irrespective of race, religion, or creed, to sign the Covenant. (AMcE)
