UDA Man's Family Sue Police for Failing to Prevent UVF Murder
The family of a murdered UDA man are suing the police for allegedly not taking steps to prevent his death.
Tommy English was shot dead by the UVF at home on the Ballyduff estate in Newtownabbey in October 2000 and his family claim the PSNI failed to take action against a police agent involved, who was linked to 10 killings before Mr English's murder.
Lawyers representing Mr English's widow, Doreen, and their children have focused on a 2007 report by former Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan.
The report found that police protected a north Belfast UVF unit, including a member identified as Informant Number One, who was linked to ten previous murders.
According to the case made at Belfast High Court today, this man would not have been free to murder Mr English had action been taken against him sooner.
Mr Justice Gillen fixed the case for a week-long hearing next March, by which time Mrs English's solicitor will seek access to Special Branch records.
The family are claiming misfeasance in public office against the chief constable, an offence which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
In February, nine men were acquitted of Mr English's murder after Justice Gillen rejected "falsely embellished" evidence from 'supergrass' brothers Ian and Robert Stewart.

Appeal Following Serious Assault And Robbery In Antrim
PSNI detectives have issued an appeal for information and witnesses after a man was assaulted and robbed in Antrim during the early hours of Monday, 18 March. The 26-year-old was walking in an alleyway adjacent to Seacash Drive at around 3.50am when he was approached by two men.

A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to a total of 12 years for offences linked to EncroChat – an encrypted communication channel used by criminals. Michael O'Loughlin was arrested in 2020 following the search of a property as part of Operation Venetic, a UK wide operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) designed to "dismantle EncroChat".
