Belfast's Oldest Tallest Tree Protected
The future of the oldest and tallest tree in Belfast has been secured, following the implementation of a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).
The Order was placed on the tree by the Department of the Environment (DOE) following concern from local residents.
Environment Minister Alex Attwood said: "I can confirm that my Department has placed a TPO on this very fine mature beech tree in the footpath close to the junction of Glastonbury Avenue and Antrim Road. I became aware of local concern regarding the future of the tree towards the end of November and instructed that the decision was progressed quickly.
"The tree is the oldest and tallest street tree in Belfast and, whilst street trees are generally well cared for by Belfast City Council on behalf of DRD Roads Service, I opted for a precautionary approach in this instance.
"The Provisional TPO was served on 14 December to safeguard the tree for its widespread public amenity value. I appreciate the co-operation my Planning officials have had in their dealings with both the City Council and DRD Roads Service. The Department now has six months to decide whether or not to confirm the TPO."

Fallen Tree Misses Belfast House
Weekend high winds all but put paid to a family home in south Belfast. Late on Saturday night, a tree crashed onto the back of a householder’s parked car, damaging the roof and the rear window. However, the family had a lucky escape after the strong winds felled a 150-year-old ash tree in their garden.

First Hiroshima Survivor Tree Sapling Planted In NI
The first Hiroshima Survivor Tree sapling in Northern Ireland has been planted by Environment Minister Edwin Poots at CAFRE's Greenmount campus in Antrim. The sapling planted by the Minister was grown from seed sent to CAFRE in early 2020 by the Green Legacy Hiroshima (GLH) Initiative.
