Two Arrested Over North Belfast Shooting

A man has been arrested following the shooting of two men in north Belfast on Friday.

The 24-year-old was arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of attempted murder and making threats to kill.

The men are aged 22 and 24 and suffered multiple gun shot wounds during the shooting, which took place in Oldpark Road. The victims are understood to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Shots were fired at the 24-year-old man, who was standing beside a car. The 22-year-old man, who was sitting inside the car, was also injured.

Police received a report of the shooting at 19.28pm on Friday evening.

Chief Inspector Andy Freeburn, the North Belfast Area Commander, has condemned the shooting as "reckless and callous".

Chief Inspector Freeburn said: "This was an utterly reckless attack with up to 40 members of the public, including women and children, in close proximity. Two people have been very seriously injured but we are lucky that we are not dealing with many more casualties today.

"This type of attack is unacceptable in our community - no one deserves to be hurt or injured in this way and no one has the right to put the safety of so many at risk.

"An investigation into this incident was launched immediately and an enquiry team will now work to ascertain the exact details and circumstances of this shooting. We will do everything we can to find those responsible and bring them before the courts. The help of the local community is vital in helping us create a clear picture of this attack and we would ask for their support as we conduct our enquiries.

"I would appeal to anyone with information to contact detectives in north Belfast on 0845 600 8000."
