Man Convicted On Drugs Charges

A 50-year-old man has been convicted for possession of £1m worth of cannabis with intent to supply.

Matthew Tyrie, from Greenisland, was found guilty by a jury at Craigavon Crown Court.

The trial followed a seizure in January of this year of 210kgs of cannabis resin, when officers stopped a car heading south on the A1 at the Hillsborough Road roundabout. Detectives believe Tyrie was an active member of an organised crime group.

Detective Chief Superintendent Roy McComb, Head of Organised Crime Branch said: "We are delighted to have taken £1 million worth of drugs out of circulation and we welcome the conviction.

"We have taken a substantial quantity of drugs off the street and have made our communities safer. We will continue to work to frustrate, disrupt and dismantle organised crime groups. We ask for continued support and information from the public so that we can make the world a smaller place for drug dealers."

Tyrie will be sentenced in the New Year.
