£55,000 Toucan Puffin Crossing Completed In Dundonald
A £55,000 pedestrian and cycle toucan puffin crossing has been completed on East Link Road, Dundonald.
The Department for Regional Development said the decision to provide the crossing was based upon "criteria relating to the number of pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road and the volume of vehicles using it".
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said: "This crossing will improve road safety for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly vulnerable road users such as children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
"The main consideration in choosing the location for the East Link crossing was to have it as close as possible to the existing crossing of the Comber Greenway with East Link Road.
"Roads Service has provided this crossing as part of their programme of providing controlled crossings at locations where the Comber Greenway is intersected by busy roads."
Puffin crossings are relatively new in Northern Ireland. A green bicycle symbol is displayed next to the green man symbol when cyclists and pedestrians are permitted to cross. Additionally, unlike the pelican crossing, before the lights for vehicles go back to green, a steady red and amber are displayed instead of a flashing amber.

The Green Party has welcomed the decision by charity & social, Orchardville, to run the Promote Learning Disability Service in Bangor after it was under threat of closure. Although delighted by the news, Councillor McKee said that it was "disgraceful" that day opportunity placements for 52 adults were put under threat.
