Chinese family assaulted during robbery ordeal

A Chinese family have suffered what police describe as "a prolonged and vicious" ordeal during a robbery at their home in south Belfast last night.

The incident occurred at around 11pm on Thursday when two masked men entered their Finaghy home through the window of a bedroom, where a bedridden elderly woman slept.

They searched rooms and demanded money before being disturbed by the arrival, a short time later, of a female member of the family and her three young children.

The woman was then physically assaulted before being put in the bedroom with the elderly woman and her children. A knife was held to her throat during the ordeal.

A short time later another two members of the family returned home. One of them, a woman, was also assaulted while the other, a man, was hit on the head with a hammer.

A large amount of money and jewellery was taken by the robbers before they escaped.

Six members of the family needed treatment following the incident.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
