Progress For New Lagan Bridge

Plans to construct a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the River Lagan has moved forward.

Three design options, from a list of 10, have now been shortlisted.

The cost of the project is said to be between £5.5m and £10m, and upon completion, around 1,000 people would use the bridge every day.

Commenting on the proposals, Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said: "Following the completion of an extensive feasibility exercise, I am pleased to present this report today. The proposals contained in the report recommend that a combined pedestrian/cycle bridge is constructed over the River Lagan between the Gasworks Site and the Ormeau Embankment.

"The number of proposals reflects the enthusiasm for a bridge in this area. It would provide important links to the city centre and connect two of the city's key assets, the Gasworks Business Park and Ormeau Park. A key aim of the proposed bridge is to create a safe and attractive route for cyclists and pedestrians to and from the city centre."

An economic appraisal will now be developed to allow further consideration of the three recommended options, before seeking approval from the Executive to proceed.
