'Pipe Bomb' Device Moved From North Belfast
A "viable pipe bomb type device" has been recovered following a security alert in the Duncairn Gardens area of north Belfast, police have said.
It is understood that the device was thrown at a parked car at about 11:00 on the morning of Monday 4 August, but did not go off.
A 27-year-old male has been arrested by detectives investigating the incident and is currently in custody.
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said: "I condemn those responsible for leaving this device under a car at Duncairn Gardens. The area was disrupted as people had to be evacuated from their homes and places of work.
"This was in a built-up area, close to homes, a doctor's surgery and business premises. Thankfully the device did not explode and no one was injured but we could have been looking at a very serious situation here if it had exploded.
"It would appear that this is the work of anti-peace process loyalists who seem intent on disrupting efforts to build bridges and develop communities. Those responsible have absolutely nothing to offer society and need to call an immediate halt to these kind of actions."
